Robeisy Ramirez Avenges Loss to Adan Gonzalez
Two-time Olympic gold medalist turned featherweight prospect Robeisy Ramirez (4-1, 3 KO’s) picked up an easy decision over Adan Gonzales (5-3-2, 2 KO’s). The win was especially sweet because it served as revenge for Ramirez who lost his professional debut to Gonzales in 2019.
In the eleven months since that bout the Cuban boxer took on and knocked out, three consecutive opponents. Gonzales has not been in the ring since he fought Ramirez. This is exactly how the rematch played out.
From the beginning, Ramirez pressed the action, set the pace and landed the cleaner more effective punches. To his credit, the Colorado native was never completely overwhelmed or consistently getting manhandled. However, it was abundantly clear Gonzalez was not in control. Furthermore, he had no real clue of how to change the temperature of the action.
In the third round, the Cuban southpaw landed his best and hardest shots. Although, the intensity of the this round died down a bit in the next.
If there was any real gripe with Ramirez’ performance it would revolve around his constant gloating during the fight. As mentioned before, Gonzales prevailed when they first met, so ultimately the Cuban’s success this time became something of a distraction.
Had the former Olympian focused more and clowned, mugged and stuck his tongue out less, he likely could have applied more pressure and looked that much better.
Admittedly, this drawback is a highly nitpicky item. When the Cuban wanted to he pushed his opponent all around the ring with his jab, and landed hard thudding hooks to the head and body all night to punctuate a great win on a big stage.
The luster Ramirez lost in a highly anticipated pro debut after defeating WBO featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson in the 2016 Olympic finals, may have just returned!
