Rolando Romero Says he is Moving Up and Calls for Errol Spence at 147!
Even in defeat, the confidence of Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-1, 12KOs) hasn’t been shaken. Although he was knocked out in six rounds by multi-weight champion Gervonta Davis (27-0, 25KOs), the former WBA Interim 135-pound champion performed better than most thought he would. While he’s been campaigning for a rematch with Davis, it seems unlikely that the two will run it back.
The brash Romero has now turned his attention towards unified 147-pound champion Errol Spence Jr. Spence is a top tier fighter, but also the promoter of lightweight contender Frank “The Ghost” Martin (16-0, 12KOs). Recently, Spence stated that Martin would beat Romero because he was simply the better fighter. Those comments didn’t sit well with Rolly.
I WANT THE BIG FISH!
In attendance at the Ryan Garcia versus Javier Fortuna fight, the Nevada native was interviewed in the aftermath of the fight. During the interview, he would immediately call for a fight with Spence.
“I want Errol Spence Jr at 147 pounds. I’m moving up. I’m a big 135-pounder. I give two fucks about 140. It’s a no-name ass division. I want Spence at 147. I’m gon’ fuck him up. “
Those comments shouldn’t come as a surprise from Rolly. He’s made it clear that he’s in the sport to become a star, not necessarily a champion. A fight with Spence equals more notoriety and an even bigger payday than his fight with Davis. But if we’re being brutally honest, this fight isn’t going to happen. For one, Spence is currently involved in deep negotiations with WBO 147-pound champ Terence Crawford for their long-awaited undisputed showdown. Furthermore, who is to say Spence even stays at 147 after that fight?
So while this trash talk from Rolly is entertaining, a fight with Spence simply won’t happen, at least not anytime soon. However, a fight between Romero and Martin would be a very good fight as both guys possess knockout power.
