Floyd Schofield Says Facing Abdullah Mason is Inevitable

If given his way, #4 (WBA) ranked lightweight fighter Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (17-0, 12 KO’s) would challenge for a title. In particular, Schofield has been calling out the name of WBC 135-pound champion Shakur Stevenson. Instead of showing any real interest himself however, Stevenson threw the up-and-coming pugilist Abdullah Mason (12-0, 10 KO’s) at him.

When doing so, Stevenson assured that if Kid Austin beat Mason, then he himself would dance with Schofield next. After going back and forth on the matter, it appeared as if the ranked bruiser would accept the proposition. Now however, it would appear that Team Schofield is thinking better of facing the Cleveland fighter. At least, this is what Floyd Schofield Sr., Kid Austin’s father and trainer, had to say in a Q&A with Broadway Joel.

“But let me tell y’all this before you fans go crazy – we done whipped Mason ass already, when we whipped Devin’s [Haney] ass and buckled Devin while he was champion getting ready for the [Yuriorkis] Gamboa fight . . . we also whipped Mason’s ass . . . so Mason ain’t no threat to us, especially with no 8oz gloves!”

“I don’t think Shakur knew the gym stories of what he did to Mason or he wouldn’t have thrown Mason out there like that. We would knock Mason out, what?! Mason is good, what, his straight right? Like we are going to sit there and wait for that lazy ass straight right! Mason is only good because of look at who he fought – cab drivers! ”

YOUNG GUNS OR CAUTIOUS BUSINESSMEN?

For his part, Mason remains visibly eager and willing to test his might against the talented and hard-hitting Floyd Schofield. Obviously, a loss at this current time would be crippling to both. Signed to Top Rank, it is beyond evident that Mason’s team wants to keep him busy. In 2022, the young technician fought five times and picked up four KO’s. During the twelve months of 2023, he fought five times again and picked up four more KO’s.

By doggedly chasing after Kid Austin though, Mason is demonstrating that beyond mere activity, he is comfortable turning up the temperature of opposition level. Many of his recent knockouts have gone viral as the blue chip prospect continues to shine his name and reputation. So while Mason is not ranked like Schofield, he still has skin in the game.

As fight fans, it would be wonderful if this intriguing duel was made a reality. In the end though, we have to wait and see what pride and the business side of boxing has to say. Let’s just hope that we get to see a prime Mason and Schofield clash this summer in a very fan-friendly rumble. Luckily though, certainly more gung-ho than the father, the son was far more open to engaging in combat.

“Like I said in an interview before, Mason he has the talent. I can say he’s going to get one of these belts soon, so we are going to fight! But, if he really wants to fight, like I told my dad, I’ll fight him but the main goal is Shakur!”
