Shakur Stevenson Believes Frank Martin Did Harm To his Image

Two-division champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (20-0, 10KO) has once again commented on the unsuccessful fight negotiations with top lightweight contender Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12KO). Stevenson believes that Martin did himself no favors by breaking his silence.

After letting several days pass without responding to Stevenson’s claims regarding the cancellation, The Ghost revealed that money was the reason for the fight’s failure. Boxing fans have become accustomed to hearing such issues arise, as fighters are increasingly conscious of the deductions that can eat into their earnings.

WHY DID HE OPEN HIS MOUTH?

During an interview with MillCity Boxing, Fearless shared his thoughts on The Ghost’s decision to walk away from the fight.

“Terrible, that was so terrible . . . I think he looked terrible. I think he looked bad. He should have just kept his mouth closed because now the world sees the truth about the situation.”

From a business standpoint, Martin made the right choice. After the deductions, he would have likely taken home only 40% of the contracted $1 million purse. This would not have been sufficient, especially when facing a fighter of Stevenson’s caliber when considering the possibility of a more lucrative fight in the future.

Stevenson has been on record stating that Martin knew he was going to lose and was simply seeking a higher payday. He has now shifted his focus and is actively pursuing a fight with Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC lightweight title. Their bout is scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on November 16.
