Errol Spence Fully Expects a Move to 154!

Unified 147-pound champion Errol “The Truth” Spence (27-0, 21KOs) is a little over two weeks away from locking horns with WBA champion Yordenis “54 Milagros” Ugas (27-4, 12KOs) in their highly anticipated unification bout. The winner will walk away with three of the four 147-pound titles, putting them one belt away from becoming the undisputed champion.

At his media day workout, the unbeaten champion fielded questions on a wide range of topics. One topic that he briefly touched on was whether or not a move up in weight to 154 was in his plans. Obviously, it’s no secret that becoming a two-division world champion is a goal for him.

He said the following regarding the impending move to the junior middleweight division once he completes his work at welterweight.

“Yeah, I plan on moving. I mean, there’s nobody really that plans to stay at one weight their whole career. So I’m definitely going to move up, I just don’t know when.”

At 32 years old, his days at welterweight are clearly numbered. While there’s been no indication of struggles to make the 147-pound weight limit, as you get older, it gets much tougher to do so. A move in weight for Spence would provide an opportunity for him to become champion in his second weight class. There are also some very intriguing fights that await him. Guys like Sebastian Fundora, Erickson Lubin, Tim Tszyu, Brian Castano, and Tony Harrison all make for some good fights down the line.

But first and foremost, he faces the formidable and dangerous Ugas. Provided he wins, then there’s hopefully the showdown fans have been clamoring for: a fight with WBO champion Terence Crawford for all the belts and welterweight supremacy!
