Subriel Matias Rates Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney

IBF junior welterweight champion Subriel “El Orgullo de Maternillo” Matias (20-1, 20KO) believes he is the best fighter in the division. Moreover, he has issued a message to champions Teofimo Lopez (WBO), Devin Haney (WBC), Rolando “Rolly” Romero (WBA), and trainer Bill Haney.

Matias raised the eyebrows of the boxing community after a video of him calling out all the champions went viral. Recently, he has taken the belt and his talents to fight under the Matchroom Boxing umbrella of Eddie Hearn.

ANOTHER HARD MESSAGE SENT

During a press conference on Matchroom Boxing to announce his upcoming fight in Puerto Rico sometime in June, El Orgullo de Maternillo sent an even harsher message this time.

“My English is not good, but the only thing I’m going to say is: I’m here, so you are watching the best 140-pounder in the world.”

Matias was far from done and ended things with this final statement:

“Whether it’s Teofimo or Haney, and I won’t mention Rolly because he’s a comedian . . . I’ll knock Teofimo out. I’ll retire him. Haney will run more than a chicken, I can promise you that. I have a message for Haney’s father, and I’m sorry for the bad language, his balls are mine.”

If there is one person that will quickly respond, it is the elder Haney, who is a hawk when it comes to his son. However, he is busy getting the WBC champion ready to defend the title against Ryan Garcia on April 20.

There is no mistaking that Matias is one of the sport’s most dangerous fighters. In November 2023, the Puerto Rican took out top contender Shohjahon Ergashev by making him quit on the stool. After beating two undefeated fighters in a row and successfully defending the title, the IBF champion is ready to take on the top names in the division.
