Sunny Edwards Confident He Handles Bam Rodriguez at Home

Two of the top fighters in the lower-weight divisions will fight one another on December 16 as IBF flyweight champion Sunny “Showtime” Edwards (20-0, 4 KOs) faces WBO 112-pound champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (18-0, 11 KOs) in a unification contest. Edwards has been in pursuit of a fight with Rodriguez and is ecstatic to get him in the ring.

MORE THAN READY

Edwards – Rodriguez was announced on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s knockout win over Robert Helenius. Speaking to Matchroom Promotions, the IBF champion and his promoter Eddie Hearn talked about the upcoming fight with Rodriguez.

“I wanna thank Eddie Hearn for making it happen; delivered me on his promise. It took one fight longer than we both wanted, but we managed to bully Bam and his team into a corner. They couldn’t run away no more, and now on the 16 of December in Arizona we go to work.”

A QUALITY OPPONENT

Edwards won the IBF belt in April 2021 with a unanimous decision victory over Moruti Mthalane. The confident Edwards has always wanted to engage in high-profile, big money fights.

It will happen against Rodriguez, who is regarded as one of the best young fighters in the sport. Bam won the vacant WBC junior bantamweight belt in February 2022 with a unanimous decision victory over Carlos Cuadras.

After defending the 115-pound title twice, Rodriguez moved down to flyweight. In April 2023, the 23-year-old won the vacant WBO 112-pound strap when he defeated Christian Hernandez by a unanimous decision. Following that win, Bam went on record saying that he wanted to fight the IBF champion.

BOLD PREDICTION

Edwards has respect for Rodriguez. He acknowledged that the WBO champion is an excellent fighter. But when they get into the ring, Showtime believes he will have his hand raised in victory as the unified the world flyweight champion.

“Bam’s definitely exciting. He’s definitely got a lot of hype, and traction behind his career. But I’m looking to put a big stop to that.

I feel like he can’t come forward. I’m gonna have him falling forward all night, and I think I’m going to make him look silly in his backyard.”

Edwards – Rodriguez will occur at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The fight will air live on DAZN.
