Prospect Giovanni Marquez Rising at Junior Welterweight
Being the offspring of a famous fighter can be challenging, but it also comes with a certain gift – a talent that can’t be taught; it’s in their blood. This is precisely what junior welterweight prospect Giovanni Marquez (6-0, 4KO) has been showcasing since turning professional in 2022.
If the last name sounds familiar, it should; This young man is the son of retired IBF junior middleweight champion and respected boxing analyst Raul Marquez. Additionally, his uncle, Rafael Marquez, a former two-division champion, was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Impressive Recent Performance
Marquez’s journey into boxing wasn’t welcomed with open arms, as his father tried to discourage him from the sport. However, after winning the Texas State and USA National Golden Gloves in 2021, Marquez’s father had to embrace the idea of training him.
On the undercard of Albert Bell vs Preco Carcosia, the 22-year-old showcased the Marquez family’s power against Nicky “The Bull” Vitone on August 11. During the lead-up to the fight, The Bull was dismissive of the young man’s accomplishments and held no respect for his opponent’s abilities.
In the first round, Marquez quickly proved why that was a mistake by working the jab and utilizing angles to land a killer left hook that sent Vitone to the canvas. In round two, the young prospect shifted into attack mode, landing flurries of unanswered punches that forced the referee to halt the fight.
The younger lion has exhibited patience and boxing ability beyond his years. Although he isn’t yet ready to face the upper-echelon names in the division, Marquez has demonstrated thus far that he’s worthy of the boxing community’s attention.
