Sunny Edwards Beats Adrian Curiel By Technical Decision
Overcoming a severe cut over his right eye, former IBF flyweight champion Sunny “Showtime” Edwards (21-1, 4 KOs) won a nine-round technical decision (90-82, 88-84, 87-85) over former world junior flyweight champion Adrian Curiel (24-6-1, 5 KOs) at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
Edwards used his fast hands and feet to tag Curiel with jabs and combinations throughout. Curiel could do nothing to thwart the slick boxing skills of Showtime.
The only problem that Edwards had to deal with came in the middle of round six when a clash of heads produced a nasty vertical gash over his right eye. Despite pouring blood, Edwards showed his professionalism and poise. But with the cut worsening, the referee felt the gash was too bad for Edwards to continue and called a halt to the contest at the opening bell for round nine.
Edwards, who wanted to put on a show for the United States audience, was disappointed with the outcome. Next up for him could be a battle with unbeaten flyweight and 2020 Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai. However, he’s likely going to be out of action for a lengthy amount of time because of the facial damage suffered in this contest.
