Mike Tyson Says Tank Davis Does Not Compare To Him
When asked how multi-divisional champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (28-0, 26KO) compared to himself, Hall of Fame heavyweight “Iron” Mike Tyson said the only similarity between the two is getting in trouble outside the ring. Davis got word and added his own response to the question.
THE ANSWER THAT STARTED IT ALL
In an interview from Fight Hub TV, Tyson was asked if Davis reminds him of himself and gave a candid response.
“I don’t know, maybe with just getting in trouble with the law. Other than that, no!”
Tank’s outside-the-ring issues were very public, especially with the mother of his child Vanessa Posso. Being a social media hawk, Davis quickly responded by claiming to be a more skillful fighter than Tyson.
BREAKING DOWN THE DIFFERENCE IN FIGHTING STYLES
Boxing fans are lighting up social media with responses going after both Tyson and Davis for their comments. However, the general context of the question is being lost in translation and should remain on comparing their fighting styles.
Tyson was a come-forward pressure fighter with quick hands and one-punch knockout power in both hands. Moreover, he was a one-dimensional brawler that relied heavily on brute strength and power to win fights throughout his career. In the early portion of his career, Tank’s style was similar to the Hall of Fame heavyweight, but that narrative is no longer valid given his recent performances.
In his last five fights, we’ve learned Davis can box off the backfoot, has good defense and ring IQ, and has learned to set traps in building up to the knockout. Basically, Davis has evolved and is no longer viewed as a one-dimensional fighter. In this author’s opinion, when comparing 28 year-old Davis to Tyson at the same age, there is a big difference between the two.
