Can Tank Be Trusted To Keep His Word And Fight Lomachenko?
WBA lightweight champion Abdul “Tank” Wahid (Gervonta Davis) (29-0, 27KO) has social media buzzing after claiming IBF champion Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (18-3, 12KO) is next.
On May 11, Hi-Tech looked sharp en route to scoring a stoppage in a one-sided beating over George Kambosos Jr. Now a the holder of the IBF title, he will more than likely be looking to unify against one of the other champions.
During the broadcast, it was posted on social media that Tank wouldn’t fight this version of Lomachenko. Without missing a beat, the Baltimore power puncher’s response had the boxing community buzzing.
As mentioned, the current WBA lightweight champion has an upcoming match against top contender Frank Martin on June 15. Boxing fans have been wanting to see Tank fight someone the caliber of Lomachenko.
WILL HE HONOR HIS WORD?
The question that fans and pundits will ponder is whether he will keep his promise. Tank has been going back and forth in heated battles with some of the other top names in the division. His recent beef with WBC champion Shakur Stevenson is well-known.
Yet, he hasn’t been in a hurry to make the fight happen. Despite being a multi-divisional champion, Tank’s resume is constantly under attack. It’s hard to believe he will look to fight the Ukrainian, given the fact he gets big paydays without taking high risks.
Lomachenko has bounced back nicely with this recent victory after losing to Haney in May 2023. In addition, he seemed to have turned back the clock to when he used to rule the division. After being made aware of Tank’s comment, he stated they can talk about things later.
“I always take the fights . . . after I rest a little bit, we can talk about the future.”
Vasyl Lomachenko
Providing he does get past Martin, Tank should fight Lomachenko to finally get the respect he has been lacking among boxing pundits.
