Zuffa’s Business Model Could Restrict Stevenson’s Legacy

Zuffa Boxing officially announced the signing of WBO junior welterweight champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson in what was boxing’s worst-kept secret. There’s evidence that Stevenson signing with Zuffa could be detrimental to his career.

Now affiliated with Zuffa, Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) claims that undisputed status is no longer his priority. Instead, the unbeaten champion says he wants the biggest fights and the biggest paydays. On the surface, signing with Zuffa appears to align perfectly with that goal. However, the move could ultimately prove to be a costly mistake.

WHAT COULD PROVE PROBLEMATIC

Zuffa Boxing has repeatedly indicated having little interest in recognizing the traditional sanctioning bodies. That philosophy creates a major problem for a fighter like Stevenson, who currently owns a world title and is one of boxing’s premier talents.

If the promotional company follows through on its vision of operating outside the established championship system, Fearless could find himself isolated from many of the sport’s elite champions. The biggest fights aren’t determined solely by star power; they often depend on titles, mandatory obligations, and promotional cooperation. Ignoring those realities could limit, rather than expand, Stevenson’s options.

History has shown that many great fighters eventually seek to cement their legacy by unifying titles. Should Stevenson later decide he wants to become the undisputed champion at 140 pounds, he may discover that his business decisions have placed unnecessary obstacles in his path.

NOT TOTALLY TRUSTWORTHY

There is also the question of Zuffa Boxing’s long-term stability. The promotion has generated considerable excitement, but it has yet to delivering major boxing events. Leaving behind the traditional promotional ecosystem for an untested model carries significant risk, especially for a fighter entering the prime of his career.

None of this suggests Stevenson won’t secure lucrative bouts. His talent and name recognition virtually guarantee interest from top opponents. But the freedom to pursue “the biggest fights” could become far more limited if promotional barriers prevent matchups with outside champions.
