Katie Taylor Ready to Prove She’s as Good as Ever Against Amanda Serrano

On April 30, undisputed female lightweight champion Katie Taylor (20-0, 6 KOs) defends her titles against current unified women’s featherweight champ Amanda Serrano (42-1-1, 30 KOs). Set to battle at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City, this is one of the biggest women’s boxing contests in recent memory.

STAYING ON AN EVEN KEEL

Given the magnitude of this showdown that’s taking place at such a historic venue, it would be understandable if the combatants carried some pre-fight jitters. On the contrary, Taylor is all the more excited as she explained during an interview on the DAZN Boxing Show.

“I wouldn’t say I’m more nervous for this fight. If anything, I’m super excited about this fight! I don’t think I’ve been as excited about a fight ever before. So, these are the kinds of fights that I’ve wanted to be involved in from the get-go. So, I really, really am excited about the fight. These are the stuff of dreams, really. These are the kinds of fights I was born for.”

Amanda Serrano, unified featherweight champion

In Serrano, Taylor is facing her most skilled opponent as a pro. The featherweight champ is multi-faceted. She has the hand speed and ring IQ to box distance but can also break opponents down on the inside. Her ability to go downstairs is one of her best attributes. To top it off, Serrano also carries power in both hands.

STILL AT HER BEST

There have been some rumblings among fans and pundits that the 135-pound champ is possibly on the decline. In fights against Natasha Jonas and Firuza Sharipova, Taylor had her struggles. Asked if she’s still as good as ever, this is what the 35-year-old had to say.

“I definitely feel absolutely great at the moment. In sparing sessions, I don’t feel like I’m slowing down whatsoever. I don’t think I showed my best in the last couple of fights. But I’m looking forward to showing my best on April 30 and looking to put on a great performance.”

She also disclosed that she was dealing with a torn calf in her last two bouts. Taylor must be healthy, injury-free, and on her A-Game to come to defeat Serrano. Anything less spells serious trouble.

HISTORY-MAKING EVENT

On paper, this is an outstanding matchup and shapes up to be a heck of a fight. Expected to be a sellout, Taylor-Serrano is the first ladies’ match to headline a boxing card at MSG. With both women guaranteed to earn at least $1million, this is the biggest money-making women’s bout ever.

On paper, this shapes up to be a good one. If the fight lives up to the hype, fans will be more than satisfied.
