Tevin Farmer Aims To Secure his Next Title Shot By 2024
Following the fifth loss of his career, to Joseph Diaz, former super featherweight champion Tevin “American Idol” Farmer (31-5-1, 6 KO’s) stepped away from the sport for three years. Farmer made a successful return to action this past June when he faced and beat Avery Sparrow by unanimous decision. Now, American Idol has every intention of not only remaining active but shooting for another title shot.
“As of right now, I am coming back in September, then I am coming back inside December. By December, I will be at least top five and early next year I should be getting a title shot again!”
If Farmer makes good on his word, it will be very interesting to see who he selects for his next opponent. The three-year hiatus is by far the longest gap of inactivity in his professional career. Even when Farmer was shot in the hand back in 2017, he only sat out a couple of months before hopping back in the ring. This only further underscores the tremendous length of time that Farmer was idle.
SO WHO’S IT GOING TO BE?!
Without question, American Idol has his work cut out for him if he does intend on competing for a world title any time soon. At the current moment, Farmer is not ranked among the top fifteen of any of the major sanctioning bodies. Considering how much ground he has to cover, the selection of his next opponent becomes that much more important.
Three names that spring to mind are Albert Bell, Lamont Roach and Chris Colbert. While Bell doesn’t have the biggest name in the division, the Toledo, Ohio native is ranked #2 (WBO) and #10 (WBC), making him a favorable option. Likewise, Lamont Roach is far from a huge draw but is ranked #1 (WBA) and #5 (WBO). Roach has also been inactive for a hair over a year.
Chris Colbert, ranked #13 (IBF) and #13 (WBC), is by far the biggest and most recognizable of this trio of fighters. Yet, Colbert is himself trying to work himself back up the ranks as he is only one fight removed from his only professional defeat to Hector Garcia. A win over any of these three men should have the desired effect of catapulting Farmer back into the top 15. For the time being though, we’ll have to wait and see what’s for Tevin Farmer.
