Tyson Fury Retires from Boxing After Satisfying Victory Over Dillian Whyte
Fighters hardly ever get to walk away from the sport of their own volition. The sport oftentimes sends them into retirement after a brutal defeat. WBC heavyweight champion Tyson “Gypsy King” Fury (32-0-1, 23KOs), after knocking out mandatory challenger Dillian “The Body Snatcher” Whyte (28-3, 19KOs) could have had that last hooray.
Several times Fury has indicated there is a chance he could be hanging up the gloves. During an interview with UK’s The Telegraph, Fury acknowledged that after his last contractual fight with Top Rank, walking away was an option.
THE CHAMP HAS LEFT THE BUILDING
Wife Paris Fury recently expressed that her husband may walk away for good and hopes he can remain retired. With all things pointing towards retirement, the boxing community was on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the post-fight interview.
When asked if this was the last hooray, the WBC heavyweight champion, in front of the United Kingdom faithful, did not give a definitive answer. But, he gave the impression that this could be it.
“I promised my lovely wife Paris of fourteen years that after the Wilder 3 fight, that would be it […] I got offered to fight at Wembley at home and I believe I deserved, I owed it to the fans, I owed it to every person in the United Kingdom to come here and fight at Wembley. Now it’s all done. I have to be a man of me word and I think this is it, this might be the final curtain for The Gypsy King.”
According to TalkSport, Fury, as previously stated, plans on sticking to his word and retiring.
“I’ve been in the game 20 years. I’m 34 in a few months. I said the third Deontay Wilder fight would be my last, but I felt I owed the fans one last homecoming. This is definitely the end of The Gypsy King, and I went out with a bang.”
POSSIBLE RETURN FOR UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Fury has retired before, falling into a state of depression following an investigation by the British Boxing Board of Control for a positive test of a banned substance back in 2015. A unified champion after defeating Vladimir Klitschko, Fury was not a beloved figure as he is now, so there will be a high demand to see him back in the ring.
Furthermore, he came out of retirement to face former WBC champion Deontay Wilder and the two warriors engaged in three lucrative fights. Fury could possibly be lured back into the sport once again to check off the last box on the list of becoming undisputed.
There will be a high demand to see Fury fight the winner between unified champion Oleksandr Usyk and former unified champion Anthony Joshua rematch. The amount of money that will be thrown around is going to be too intoxicating to pass up.
The boxing community needs to strap in because the next couple of months are going to be extremely interesting.
