The WBC Grant Fury and Whyte an Extension…Again!
For the second time in a short two weeks, the WBC has extended the free negotiation period between WBC heavyweight champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury (31-0-1, 22 KO’s) and Dillian “The Body Snatcher” Whyte (28-2, 19 KO’s). Now the fighters have until January 28 to make something happen. The two camps have been trying fruitlessly to create a mutually satisfactory contract for some time now. If given his way, Fury would rather take on WBA Super, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (19-0, 13 KO’s) in place of the Body Snatcher.
Even if Usyk did want to accept that fight, and it appears that he does, the Ukrainian has his hands tied with Anthony Joshua. Back on September 25, 2021, Usyk successfully toppled Joshua by way of unanimous decision. With the spoils of war the former cruiserweight champion gobbled up AJ’s gaggle of titles. It was the second defeat of Joshua’s career. The first came at the hands of Andy Ruiz. Like the Ruiz affair, Joshua is planning to stage an immediate rematch to get his titles back. Having enacted the rematch clause in their contract, Usyk is not available for Fury.
Ideally, this situation will wrap itself up in short order. Sadly, given the overly convoluted nature of the negotiations so far, this is an unlikely scenario. This is rather strange given how long Whyte has been chasing his shot at the WBC title. Let Fury’s co-promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions, tell it, Whyte is simply being greedy. If this is true, let’s hope that more rational minds can prevail and this drawn out matter can be brought to a close. In any event, 3Kings Boxing will be there to report the news.
