Austin Williams Outpoints Kieron Conway and Wins Secondary WBA Title
In his latest in-ring tour of duty, middleweight contender Austin “Ammo” Williams (12-0, 9 KO’s) took on Kieron “Too Class” Conway (18-3-1, 4 KO’s). The two fought on the high-profile undercard of Alvarez vs Golovkin 3. Hanging in the balance of their brawl was the vacant WBA International 160-pound title.
Both men were confident yet it was Williams who started the fight as the ring aggressor and applied responsible pressure. Despite the consistent pressure, Conway held his composure well and landed a good number of solid counterpunches. The action remained steady but was not all that compelling through the first half of the ten-round match. During those middle rounds, Ammo did display a slight dip in activity, yet Conway didn’t do anything overly compelling to take advantage. Then in the eighth period, Williams did land a few heavy shots that drew blood from Conway’s nose.
Smelling blood, Ammo upped the pressure and scored an anticlimactic knockdown in the ninth with a stiff right uppercut. Too Class made it to his feet and completed the round without further issue. When all the dust had settled though, Ammo walked away with a unanimous decision victory and the vacant WBA International middleweight title. It will be interesting to see how aggressively Williams is matched in his next outing.
