Yoenis Tellez Wins UD Over Mendoza To Keep Title Hopes Alive
To kick off his 2026 in style, super welterweight boxer Yoenis “El Bandolero” Tellez (12-1, 8 KO’s) defeated a very tough Brian “La Bala” Mendoza (23-5, 17 KO’s) by unanimous decision. When all the fur had finished flying, Tellez claimed the hard-fought decision to the tune of 98-92 (twice) and 97-92.
Having collected Mendoza’s scalp in the impressive win, Tellez should only improve his foothold in the rankings. Presently, the Cuban pugilist is ranked #5 (WBA) which presents him with a few lush would-be options. While his lack of mainstream notoriety could be used held against him, El Bandolero is in favorable position to gun for fights with WBA 154-pound champion Xander Zayas (23-0, 13 KO’s) and interim WBA super welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (35-0, 31 KO’s).
Zayas was last in the squared-circle this past January 31 when he claimed a split decision win over Abass Baraou. For his part, Boots last competed against Uisma Lima, who he toppled by first round TKO on October 11, 2025.
Regrettably for Tellez, the current industry scuttlebutt is indicating that Ennis and Zayas will likely dance with one another in their next prizefight. If this proves to be true, Tellez will have to look for the next best thing. So, let’s see what El Bandolero and his team come up with next.
