Keyshawn Davis Adds Abdullah Mason to His Scattered Hitlist
Junior welterweight contender Keyshawn “The Businessman” Davis (14-0, 10 KOs) appears to be calling out just about everyone from 135 to 147 pounds. His latest target is reigning WBO lightweight champion Abdullah Mason (20-0, 17 KOs). However, the situation raises questions about whether Davis has a clear vision for his career.
Both Davis and Mason attended a press conference announcing the partnership between Top Rank and DAZN. Afterward, Davis publicly confronted Mason, telling the boxing media:
“I want to fight you this year. Can we make it happen this year? Are we going to make it happen this year? I’m pulling teeth trying to get him to fight me. Do you see this?”
WHAT DOES HE REALLY WANT?
At the same time, Davis also expressed interest in facing WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney. That’s where the confusion begins. Is Davis aiming to move up to welterweight to challenge Haney, or is he expecting Mason to move up to 140? Trying to pursue both paths simultaneously sends mixed signals.
Realistically, neither fight appears attainable in the immediate future. Haney is widely expected to pursue a unification bout with Rolando Romero, which would take priority over a clash with Davis. Meanwhile, both Davis and Mason are aligned with Top Rank, and the promotion is clearly focused on developing Mason’s profile at lightweight. Matching the two against each other now would be counterproductive to that strategy. As a result, Davis’s recent callouts risk coming across as more aspirational than practical. While ambition is essential in boxing, it must be paired with a clear and strategic path forward.
For now, Davis’s most logical move is to remain at junior welterweight and focus on high-level competition currently within the division. By continuing to showcase his skills and building momentum, he can position himself for a legitimate title opportunity rather than chasing fights that are unlikely to materialize in the near term.
