Arnold Barboza Gets Generous Scorecards Over Sean McComb
In a battle featuring two top-rated junior welterweights, Sean “The Public Nuisance” McComb (18-2, 5KO) was denied a victory over Arnold Barboza Jr. (30-0, 11KO).
The Public Nuisance used his height and reach to cause problems for Barboza Jr., who had trouble finding the range. McComb did a good job of constantly moving, making it hard to hit him with a solid punch. Barboza Jr. had to switch up the game plan and start going to the body, hoping to slow down the much taller Irishman.
McComb’s confidence was growing after all the success. He used feints and combinations that prevented the Californian from being able to attack. Moreover, he landed solid uppercuts on the inside that forced Barboza to retreat. It wasn’t the performance that Barboza hoped to give as he was repeatedly hit with combination punches. Outside of landing a few good right hands sparingly, he failed to make the necessary adjustment.
The Public Nuisance controlled this fight by boxing smart and was the more effective fighter. His movement, defense, ability to fight off the backfoot and jabs were used to perfection. In all too familiar fashion, one judge scored it 98-92 for McComb. The other two judges had the audacity to score it 98-93 and 96-94 for Barboza Jr.
It was a complete robbery as Barboza Jr. did not win any of the four criteria when scoring a boxing match. Effective aggression, clean punching, defense, and ring generalship were all controlled by McComb.
