Shakur Stevenson Still Lacking a Foe As Tank Set to Face Martin
For a number of weeks now, there has been an open secret that WBA lightweight champion Abdul “Tank” Wahid (Gervonta Davis) (29-0, 27 KO’s) was going to next face top contender Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12 KO’s). Now, both fighters have taken to their social media to substantiate this long-standing assumption. One person who will definitely not jump for joy with this announcement is WBC lightweight champion “Fearless” Shakur Stevenson (21-0, 10 KO’s).
Over the last several days, via social media, Stevenson and Tank have been trading more insults than a Brooklyn battle rap session. Currently, Fearless has a July dance date but has yet to reveal anyone as his opponent.
A FIGHT TO REVISIT?
Obviously, Stevenson would have loved to have stolen Martin’s thunder and snatched his dance ticket. With this latest announcement, it’s clear that Stevenson will have to keep looking. Ironically, the New Jersey native was all lined up to face The Ghost himself, yet this match fell apart when Stevenson refused to pay what Martin was demanding. Now, Martin, ranked #7 (IBF) and #2 (WBA), has moved on and up and will be fighting boxing showstopper Tank.
If The Ghost was able to prevail over Wahid, then it would certainly breathe all new life into a potential showdown with Stevenson. Not only would Martin nab the scalp of a top fighter, he would also take possession of Tank’s belt. At the moment, the IBF and WBO straps are vacant, making Stevenson the only other belt-holding champion. This would make this would-be duel one of great importance.
Before we get too carried away with these fantasy matches, we first must see what happens when Tank and Martin collide. No matter who prevails, both, Wahid and The Ghost, have some manner of static with Shakur Stevenson. With him being a title holder, this should lubricate the gears of putting together a notable unification battle.
