Blair Cobbs Believes He Will KO IBF Champ Jaron Ennis!
In his last outing, IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (32-0 29 KO’s) pummeled, dropped and potentially broke the jaw of seasoned fighter David Ananesyan en route to a fifth round TKO. The duel snapped a year of inactivity for Ennis and served as a great highlight reel to fans as to why he is one of the hottest rising stars in the sport. So naturally, rival boxers such as Blair “The Flair” Cobbs (17-1-1, 10 KO’s) were quick to call out the IBF champion.
In a brief Q&A with Fight Hype, The Flair supplied his two cents on why he feels Cobbs versus Ennis would be a battle worthy of the fans purchasing a ticket.
“I think the last thing that he would want to do is fight Blair The Flair! I am still the most revered fighter, the most unpredictable and probably a person to stay away from. And that’s just what it is, the best thing to do is just stay away from me. If he fought me next, he would lose; if he fought me down the road, he will lose . . . That’s the reason I am out here trying to fucking call him out!”
“What happens when he hits the deck? He’ll hit the deck, there’s things he won’t be able to see coming, there are things he won’t be able to counter. I will manipulate and control his foot movement because some people are just faster, foot-wise. There are things that need to be questioned.”
THE MOST ELECTRIFYING?!
For the better part of his career, Cobbs has largely been viewed as a novel fringe contender. His flamboyant ways and ritual imitation of legendary wrestler Ric Flair has been funny, but many wrote him off. In recent years however, The Flair has accumulated wins over Maurice Hooker and, most recently, Adrien Broner. With these victories, some have begun to view him in a more respectable light.
Another feather in his cap, in regards to Ennis, is the fact that they are both natives of Philly and would likely make for a huge hometown fight. In his latest duel with Avanesyan, Boots nearly sold out the large Wells Fargo Center, proving that he was a significant draw there. If facing another fellow Philadelphian, especially one who talks as loud and boisterous as Cobbs, it is not hard to envision this being another huge local commercial success.

On the flipside, at welterweight, Cobbs is not ranked in the top fifteen of any of the major sanctioning bodies and Ennis is openly shopping around for bigger fights. Boots has doggedly called out two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford and Oscar De La Hoya has been sniffing around trying to pen a duel with Ennis versus his super welterweight charge, Vergil Ortiz. Even better for Ennis, Saudi Arabian sports minister Turki Alalshikh has shown great public interest in Boots fighting either Crawford or Ortiz and seems to be willing to bankroll the affairs.
There is no question that both Crawford and Ortiz’s names hold more weight in boxing circles than Cobbs, and the involvement of Turki Alalshikh would insinuate that they come with a better paycheck as well. So, while this is a great hometown dustup, for the time being, logic would suggest that Team Ennis will put Cobbs on the back burner, at best. Yet, much stranger things have happened in the sport of boxing. So let’s sit back and see what’s next for Boots and The Flair.
