Cecilia Braekhus is Taking Her Talents to Junior Middleweight!
They say good things come to an end, and for the most part, that is true. This is especially the case when it comes to sports. Throughout the history of athletic competition, we’ve seen many great teams and individuals reign supreme over their competition. We’ve also seen the best eventually falter, leading to the end of a dominant reign or era. When it comes to Cecilia “The First Lady” Braekhus (36-2, 9KOs), she’s no different.
The former undisputed women’s 147-pound champion saw her reign come to an end against Jessica “CasKILLA” McCaskill (11-2, 4KOs) in August of 2020. While many felt she won the fight, the judges saw otherwise. Instead of pouting over her first career defeat, in March of 2021, she attempted to reclaim her status as the number one female welterweight in the world. However, like in the first fight with McCaskill, she would lose, this time in a much more clear defeat.
The loss to McCaskill ended her reign as the undisputed welterweight champion, which started after she defeated Ivana Habazin in September 2014 to become the undisputed welterweight champion. She would defend her undisputed title 10 consecutive times.
TAKING HER TALENTS TO 154
However, with her welterweight reign having ended, the former 147-pound kingfish is taking her talents to the junior middleweight division. She said the following in an exclusive interview with her sponsors at Betsson:
“I have chosen to take the step away from welterweight and will continue my career in the weight class above, super welterweight.”
Cecilia Braekhus, former undisputed welterweight champion
At 40 years old, it’s clear that she’s no longer in her prime, but that’s not stopping her from continuing on in her career. At 154, there are some solid fights to be made, which include possible fights with WBA champion Hannah Rankin, WBC champion Patricia Berghult, former IBF champion Marie Eve Dicaire, or former champion Hanna Gabriels. It also means the possibility of her fighting for the IBF and WBO titles, which are both vacant. Not to mention a possible showdown with two-division undisputed champion Claressa Shields. The two ladies, in the past, have gone back and forth.
One of women’s boxing’s greatest technical and fundamentally sound fighters ever will definitely be a factor as she ventures up in weight. Before it’s all said and done, Braekhus may end her career as a two-division world champion.
