Trevor Bryan and Daniel Dubois May Be Facing a Career Crossroads On Fight Night

When last in the ring, Regular WBA heavyweight champion Trevor Bryan (22-0, 15 KO’s) fought Jonathon Guidry to snap a year-long stretch of inactivity. Prior to that duel, Bryan had remained idle for roughly two and a half years, before knuckling-up with Bermane Stiverne.

Therefore, it should come as little surprise that Bryan vowed to remain far busier in the upcoming months and years. Now, he will get the chance to validate this claim. That is because the WBA has formally ordered that he go to a purse bid with his mandatory challenger “Dynamite” Daniel Dubois (17-1, 16 KO’s). The actual bid will take place on Monday, March 14, 2022.

THE ROCKY PAST

Truth be known, this is a significant fight for both competitors. In terms of Bryan, it will keep him busy like he wants and pit him against a well-known opponent. If he is victorious, Dubois would be an impressive scalp for him to collect. It will also give him a taste of stiffer heavyweight competition without throwing him in with the deadlier fighters in the division.

For Dubois, it will be another solid step toward rebuilding his reputation and momentum since being stopped by Joe Joyce. When in against Joyce, on November 28, 2020, Dubois suffered a damaged eye socket and would ultimately opt to bow out in the tenth round. Naturally, Dynamite was instantly branded a quitter and written off by huge chunks of the boxing populace. Since the setback with Joyce, Dubois has secured two wins, both by knockout, over Bogdan Dinu and Joe Cusumano.

Ideally for him, Dubois topples Bryan in spectacular fashion. Even if he does though, there will be a healthy contingent of boxing fans who’ll say that Bryan was essentially irrelevant to the upper echelons of the heavyweight landscape anyway. At the same time however, strong-arming Bryan for his title would crown Dubois as a belt holder. Even though it’s a second tier title, it’s a title nonetheless and still elevates his position in the sport.

GLOOM OR GLORY?!

Assuming that no boxing curveballs are thrown, it will be interesting to see how these men represent themselves in the ring. Given his huge gaps of inactivity, Bryan can’t afford to lose his title and current place in line. If he did, he might very well never get another chance to challenge for a championship belt again.

Similarly, Dubois can ill afford to take another loss so close on the heels of his previous defeat. Not to mention the quitter label hanging over his head. Even though he is still a baby in the sport, at the age of 24, another loss could do irreparable damage to his credibility and marketability. So as odd as it may sound, there is definitely a ‘crossroads’ element to this bout. Thankfully, 3Kings Boxing will be here to supply all the play-by-play developments!
