Canelo Alvarez To Fight on PBC; Jermall Charlo Believed to be Next
The boxing community is about to get turned upside down! Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (59-2-2, 33KO) posted a video on Instagram indicating a fight with WBC middleweight champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo (32-0, 22KO) is a done deal. According to ESPN, Canelo has possibly signed on for a three-fight deal with PBC.
“Done Deal. See you soon Sep. 2023. Premier Boxing Champions”
Rumors had been circulating that a fight featuring the two champions was in the works. Moreover, Canelo vs Charlo seemed inevitable after fights with WBC cruiserweight champion Badou “The Ripper” Jack and two-time champion David Benavidez were killed.
Adding even more intrigue to the story was an interview on the DAZN Boxing Show featuring Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn acknowledging Hit Man as the front runner.
The WBC champion has called for a fight with the undisputed champion in the past. He has been under heavy scrutiny about his resume and recent inactivity. For the past two years, Charlo has been sidelined while dealing with personal issues. His last in-ring appearance was a title defense against Juan Montiel in June 2021.
Alvarez is coming off a one-sided beating of John Ryder on May 6. He also has been catching a heat from fans for his choice of opponents since losing to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.
In this author’s opinion, this is a good fight for both champions. Charlo is no pushover and possesses the tools to overcome Canelo. This will certainly push the WBC champion to bring his A-game. On the other hand, this can help alleviate critiques that the Mexican superstar avoids dangerous opponents. Look for this showdown to likely land on September 16.
