Canelo Alvarez Drops a Hypocrisy Bomb on Terence Crawford
Sometimes, a fighter should keep their mouths shut, especially when they go out of their way to question the credentials of one of their contemporaries. That has become the case for reigning undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs), who has taken to questioning the résumé of Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). Alvarez’s claims are wrongheaded, to say the least.
Canelo and Bud will battle one another on September 13 in Las Vegas. During the media tour to promote the fight, both combatants sat down for an interview for Ring Magazine. When the topic of fistic resumes came up, Alvarez claimed Bud never fought an elite fighter.
UPON CLOSER INSPECTION
Alvarez is guilty of disregarding and disrespecting what Crawford has done up to this point. He is a two-division undisputed champion and the reigning WBA belt-holder at 154 pounds. Along the way, he avoided no one and defeated respected names such as Yoriorkis Gamboa, Viktor Postol, Shawn Porter, and former long-reigning welterweight champion Errol Spence.
Conversely, Canelo’s level of competition has dropped drastically over the last five years. During that stretch, the only elite opponent the Mexican superstar faced was Dmitry Bivol, who thoroughly outboxed him in May 2022. Canelo dared to call someone’s opposition into question when his last three opponents were the very average William Scull, Edgar Berlanga, and Jaime Munguia.
This reeks of hypocrisy and selective memory from the super middleweight champion. Rather than questioning Crawford’s credentials, Alvarez would be better served focusing on what he needs to do to win.
