Canelo Alvarez vs Chris Eubank Jr. Possibility Triggers Benavidez
Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39KO) is reportedly looking to fight “Next Gen” Chris Eubank Jr. (33-3, 24KO). This move continues to display Canelo’s unwillingness to fight mandatory challenger and WBC interim light heavyweight titlist David “The Monster” Benavidez (29-0, 24KO).
Some inside the boxing community are shaking their heads as ESPN reports that Canelo is seeking a possible fight with Eubank Jr. This is disappointing news to boxing fans, who have been calling for the Mexican to fight Benavidez. This marks the third name attached to Alvarez as a possible opponent following the news of IBF mandatory William Scull.
Before the news hit of Alvarez considering Eubank as an opponent, the interim titlist posted a picture of him hunting ducks with Canelo’s face on them.
Benavidez must have had some kind of intuition as the undisputed champion continues to avoid him.
THIS FIGHT MAKES NO SENSE
The reality is a fight with Eubank Jr. makes no sense at all. Yes, he is coming off a win over veteran Liam Smith, but unless that fight is in the United Kingdom, nobody is interested in seeing it. Furthermore, nobody believes he stands any chance of winning, to begin with. Plus, the network that carries the fight may have to accept they will lose money as Alvarez will demand a hefty price tag, and there could be no financial return.
There is no justifiable reason why Alvarez shouldn’t fight Benavidez in September. That is the only fight, from a financial standpoint, that makes sense. Plus, given The Monster’s recent performance against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, many believe Canelo is worried over nothing.
Hopefully, this is all a ploy, and a fight with Benavidez will happen. But, for now, it seems that Eubank Jr is the new frontrunner.
