Cecilia Braekhus Decisions Maricela Cornejo and Eyes A Title Shot
At the Mandalay Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Cecilia “The First Lady” Braekhus (38-2-1, 9 KOs) overcame a slow start to take home a unanimous decision win (96-93, 96-93, 96-93) over Maricela Cornejo (19-7, 7 KOs) in a junior middleweight contest.
Cornejo got off to a good start in the early rounds, using that height and reach to outbox Braekhus from distance. Late in round four, Braekhus was credited with a knockdown. However, replays showed that the knockdown was the result of Cornejo getting her feet tangled rather than from the impact of any punch.
Braekhus fought on the front foot from the opening bell. During the middle rounds, the one-time undisputed welterweight champion increased her pressure and work-rate. Her efforts paid off as she landed with some solid right hands to the chin. The First Lady took charge in the second half of the contest. Cornejo began to show signs of fatigue, and her punch output decreased.
With the win, Braekhus won the WBC Interim 154-pound title. She hopes her next fight will be against the unified junior middleweight champion, Ema Kozin.
