Jermall Charlo calls out Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez; snubs Demetrius Andrade!
After making the fourth successful defense of his WBC Middleweight title, Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22KOs) declared that the 160 pound division is his! Charlo, who dominated Juan Macias Montiel (22-5-2, 22KOs) in front of his hometown fans in Houston, Texas, was asked yet again asked about the other big names in or around his division.
He told Jim Gray the following:
“160 is my weight division, I wanna unify. I wanna get Golovkin in the ring, bring him to Houston you know what I’m saying. I wanna get Canelo out here to Houston, if they willing to come down to 160. This my weight division. I’m gone stay here and I’m gone reign here at 160, this my fourth title defense, I got many more to go.
I’m young, I’m hungry, I’m ready. Hey Montiel, thank you man, thank you man, warrior! Lions only!”
Charlo minced no words on his intentions with Golovkin.
“I mean Golovkin is about to unify, so maybe we can fight for all them belts he about to get. Or if he win, I can fight the winner. The other ones hiding in the weeds, we ain’t worried about them right now. You know what a lion do when they hunt. It’s a difference between chasing and it’s a difference between hunting. We on the hunt!”
LET’S TALK POSSIBILITY
It’s clear that Jermall Charlo is keen on fighting either Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez. Both are men whom he has called out numerous times. A fight with Golovkin, who currently holds the IBF middleweight title, seems more realistic, but not likely. It’s looking like he will be taking a tune-up fight before a unification fight against WBA Middleweight champion Ryan Murata in December.
As for Canelo Alvarez, people shouldn’t hold their breath for these two men to fight; especially if Charlo expects it to happen at middleweight. The Mexican superstar is currently a three-belt holder at 168 and eyeing a showdown with IBF Super Middleweight champion Caleb Plant. The winner will be crowned the division’s undisputed champion.
One guy he hinted about but did not utter the name of is WBO champion Demetrius Andrade. Both Charlo brothers and Andrade have a genuine disdain for each other. However, with Golovkin and Alvarez not feasible at the moment, the perfect fight for the WBC champion is a long overdue unification bout with Andrade. The two men have top notch skills, unbeaten records and titles. With no big fights on the horizon, this is the time to make this fight happen!
