Gary Cully Keeps Perfect Record Against Miguel Vazquez

In his first fight of 2022, lightweight contender Gary “The Diva” Cully (14-0, 8 KO’s) cruised to a dominant win over former IBF 135-pound champ Miguel “Titere Puppet” Vazquez (44-11, 17 KO’s). Cully secured the win by way of fifth round stoppage. Armed with this latest victory, the Irishman will continue to put himself in position to challenge for a title. Cully entered the bout with a #10 (WBA) ranking.

As for veteran Titere Puppet, he will now return to his native Mexico to rethink his career. Clearly his best days are behind him. While he has a laundry list of losses on his ledger, to his credit, he’s lost to some notable boxers such as: Argenis Mendez, Mickey Bey, Timothy Bradley Jr, Josh Taylor and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (twice). Ideally this will be the last time that Vazquez braves the ring in a professional contest.

ONE-SIDED DOMINATION

Right from the start of the bout, the two men went straight at one another with a whirlwind of punches. Yet, despite their zeal for attacking, both were pretty wild and inaccurate with their shots. As far as their in-ring roles went though, Cully was the more mobile of the two. He utilized the whole ring while his Mexican adversary diligently pursued him around the ring. The second largely followed the format of the first. Vazquez ended the period with a small cut on the outside of his left eye due to a straight right.

With the coming of the third round, the Diva was extremely comfortable, almost dancing on his feet and even scoring a technical knockdown. After Cully clipped Titere Puppet with a straight left he was forced to put his glove on the ground to keep from going to the canvas. So while he never left his feet, he was charged for the knockdown. During the final minute of the fourth, Vazquez got caught with a right hook that momentarily buckled his legs. Nonetheless, he remained on his feet.

The end finally came in the fifth when the Diva nailed Vazquez with a straight left down the pipe that sank him to the canvas. Once on the floor, Titere Puppet made it to his hands and knees but could rise no further before the count of ten. Without question, this was a great win for the rising lightweight Gary Cully.
