David Benavidez Sees David Morrell as the Second Best Fight Possible at 168
Two-time WBC 168-pound champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez (27-0, 23KO) believes a fight with WBA Regular champion David Morrell (9-0,8KO) is a great fight. While dismissing reports that he and Morrell have agreed to fight this fall, The Mexican Monster has not closed the door on fighting the uber-talented Cuban southpaw.
While speaking with Fighthype, Benavidez admitted that the WBA champion needs more attention on his name. He is still willing to fight him, regardless.
“So, there’s two best fights: Me and Canelo, and me and Morrell . . . I feel like they have to get his name [Morrell] a little bit bigger. But, I mean, I’ll fight him whenever, it really doesn’t matter to me. But, yeah, that’s a great fight right there.”
Benavidez is fully aware of the risk of fighting such a dangerous fighter in Morrell. But he also understands there aren’t a lot of other options for him.
“For me, like there’s not really too much other options . . . we’re just trying to make the biggest fights happen, and the best fights happen right now.”
As confident as Benavidez is in his ability to defeat the WBA Regular champion, Morrell is just as confident he will come out victorious against the two-time champion.
The Cuban knockout artist wasted little time in calling out his stablemate after running over Yamaguchi Falcao on April 22. In an interview with Fighthype, Morrell said he believes he has all the tools necessary to defeat Benavidez.
With undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez turning down $50 Million to fight him, it will be interesting to see if Benavidez versus Morrell can get over the finish line.
