David Morrell Believes He Is Fit to Overcome David Benavidez

Cuba’s David Morrell (8-0, 7 KOs) is days away from his April 22 title defense of the WBA Regular super middleweight belt against Brazilian Yamaguchi Falcao in Las Vegas, Nevada. But that hasn’t stopped insiders from pondering what could be down the road for Morrell. Specifically, that would include a potential battle against unbeaten WBC Interim champion David “Red Flag” Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs).

Morrell has been making the customary media run in Las Vegas in between his preparation for Falcao. During an interview with media source FightHype, he was asked about the possibility of fighting Benavidez and said the following:

“I respect him, I respect Team Benavidez, I respect the Mexican people. But inside the ring, I respect nothing . . . I’m ready for anybody . . . I got the moves, I got the power, I got the defense . . . Mentally, I got everything to beat Benavidez.”

PLANS ALREADY IN THE WORKS

Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, has acknowledged an official contract for a matchup between the two undefeated 168-pounders. That has fight enthusiasts buzzing on boxing message boards.

It would be a fantastic matchup. Benavidez can apply pressure and break his opponents down. But the fighter from Phoenix, Arizona is also patient and selective. That was clear during his unanimous decision win over former IBF champion Caleb Plant on March 25. After playing the patience game in the early rounds, Benavidez dominated and punished Plant over the second half of the contest.

Morrell is more of a classic boxer. His skills are a product of the decorated Cuban amateur system. As a pro, Morrell has developed into a complete fighter. He has the skillset to outslick anyone in the division. But the 25-year-old also sports adequate inside-fighting ability.

Above everything, Morrell must first take care of business against Falcao on April 22. Should that occur, all roads would likely lead to Benavidez later this year in a showdown hardcore fans would welcome with open arms.
