Tank Davis Still at Odds with Mayweather Promotions

One would think that ‘regular’ WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (27-0, 25 KO’s) would be sitting on top of the world. The popular fighter remains undefeated, a serious box-office draw and has announced not one, but two upcoming fights. The first will be against Hector Luis Garcia in January. Then, later in April, Tank will face Ryan Garcia in a true mega-fight. Despite these seemingly good turns of fortune, Davis is still displaying evidence that he and his Mayweather promotional team remain at odds.

GRUNT OR GET OFF THE POT!

The ‘regular’ WBA champion has had a rather rocky professional tenure with the company. Even though many deplore his lack of true top-tier competition, there is no denying that Mayweather Promotions has built Tank into a true boxing attraction, complete with an appeal that extends to hardcore and casual fans alike. Nevertheless, Davis has never been bashful about voicing his mind, whether good or bad. Now, once again on his social media, while responding to a fan, Tank aired a bit more dirty laundry.

If Davis feels that the partnership has soured to the point that the promotional company is not promoting, then why stay? Floyd Mayweather Jr, the face of Mayweather Promotions, once famously bought his way out of his unfavorable Top Rank contract. He then went on to be one of the most profitable boxers in the history of the sport. Ironically, after having similar difficulties last year, WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford abandoned his long-time business dealings with Top Rank as well.

Instead of blazing his own trail, as Crawford did when his contract expired earlier this year, Davis opted to stay put and continue to sling mud. This seems both foolhardy and unproductive. It will be interesting to see if anything substantial comes from this latest episode of Twitter fingers. If anything does further ignite, 3Kings Boxing will be sure to report the explosion!
