De La Hoya Thinks It’s Time to Hit The Brakes On Floyd Schofield
Over the last year or so, lightweight boxer Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (18-0, 12 KO’s) has been calling out all the top players in the division. In his opinion, not only has he paid his dues, he believes he has the skill set to topple anyone. Following the performance Schofield turned in against Rene Giron however, his Golden Boy Promotions promoter Oscar De La Hoya feels quite the opposite. While providing a post-fight interview, De La Hoya presented a much more grim reality.
“I was an ex-fighter myself, I give him like a C-. The reason why is there were things that he can do that are better but that’s the reason why we have the best matchmakers in the world because we knew that Floyd was going to get tested. This kid [Giron] has a chin like granite. I would have loved to have seen more body shots.”
“I think he would have stopped him to the body, but look, you learn from this fight, you grow. And trust me, Floyd will come back better, bigger, stronger, faster and wiser . . . He wants to fight all the top guys but we got to slow him down a bit! Slow him down, go back to the drawing board and learn from your mistakes.”
TO STAY OR LEAVE?!
Without question, this diagnosis will not sit well with Team Schofield who have regularly called out names like two-division champion Shakur Stevenson and WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Going by what De La Hoya has just said though, Golden Boy Promotions will make zero effort to secure those duels at this time. Therefore, it will be very telling to see how Schofield and crew respond.
Will they heed this advice and pump the brakes on his career in order for him to garner more experience? Or will these words offend – causing rancor and convince Kid Austin that he needs to seek out a new promotional staff elsewhere? Now, it will be very interesting to see how Team Schofield play their hand over the next several weeks and months.
