De La Hoya Wants To Keep Garcia Away From Devin Haney
In his latest tour of duty, former undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (32-0, 15 KO’s) pitched a near shutout performance. Despite the overall dominance of his opponent, Jose Ramirez, his choice to fight in a very mobile fashion turned a great deal of the fanbase. Among those displeased was Golden Boy Promotions co-founder Oscar De La Hoya. In fact, De La Hoya was so disenchanted that he felt there was no need for Haney face his charge “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KO’s).
“It just doesn’t merit a rematch, I mean Devin actually lost winning! His stock is super down, I mean I am just stating facts here. People are talking about him just being a runner, not a boxer. There is something about a boxer like Pernell Whitaker, like Meldrick Taylor, like Sweet Pea [Pernell Whitaker] those are boxers, you know, this guy is a runner! Why would I want to see that?”
SOUNDS FISHY!
It’s really disappointing to hear De La Hoya make this statement. To begin, it comes off as completely disingenuous. This is because it was common knowledge that had both Garcia and Haney been successful in their last assignments they would have fought next.
Haney took care of business versus the previously mentioned Jose Ramirez. King Ry on the other hand, fell short and lost to Rolando Romero. Furthermore, while De La Hoya is lamenting The Dream’s showing, not only did Garcia lose he looked sloppy, timid and rather unconfident when doing so. Perhaps this is why the Golden Boy mentioned a slew of potential names without one of them being Haney’s.
“There’s several [matches for Garcia]. We can do a rematch with Rollies [Rolando Romero]…you do Ryan again if he keeps winning and then it merits the rematch with Tank [Gervonta Davis], not right now. But there are a lot of fights we can do, even with Top Rank with Kid Austin, we have William Zepeda, it’s endless! I am excited!”
THE WAITING GAME
While any of the names that De La Hoya paraded for public consumption all make for handsome options, none come close to the pre-existing hype already surrounding Haney vs Garcia 2. So, let’s hope that Garcia looks solid enough in his next prizefight that his promoters will feel confident giving him and the fans the fight that so many want to see. In the meantime, we will just have to wait and see!
