Edgar Berlanga Goes to War Backed by New Trainer Juan DeLeon

In his next assignment, super middleweight fighter Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (19-0, 16 KO’s) will match skills and wits with two-time super middleweight title challenger Roamer Angulo (27-2, 23 KO’s). Berlanga will face this challenge housed in the infamous walls of Madison Square Garden located in his native New York City. While The Chosen One has fought in Madison Square Garden a number of times, this will mark the first time ever that Juan DeLeon will function as his chief second.

Previously, Berlanga was trained by respected head coach Andre Rozier who has manned the corner for fighters such as Curtis Stevens, Sadam Ali, Chris Algeri, Luis Collazo and Daniel Jacobs. To launch his career, The Chosen One began in marvelous fashion by collecting 16 straight knockout wins. In the past eight of those dustups, Rozier headed his corner.

Having already amassed a huge following which included a number of very vocal celebrities, a great deal of attention and pressure was placed on Berlanga’s shoulders to remain impressive and devastating. Unfortunately for Team Berlanga, his last three matches have all ended in unanimous decision victories. Naturally the fans want to see him return to his destructive ways. Sensing the need for a change, the Brooklynite enlisted the tutelage of Juan DeLeon who’s trained such fighters as Alberto Machado and heavyweight contender “Baby” Joe Mesi.

GIVE IT TIME

DeLeon likes what he sees in terms of Berlanga’s skill set and room to improve. With that being said, the experienced chief second foresees a bright future for his new charge as he continues to grow and develop.

“And he has the potential and he’s so powerful too and then he got the height! He’s about 6’1, so his body can hold that weight. He not going to get weaker, he is going to get stronger, so eventually he is stronger than all of them. You know, he is 25 years old. So in three more years he is going to be 28 and that’s when his body is going to be mature. But right now he is still a baby, I promise you.”

In regards to the bout with Angulo, DeLeon can’t see it being anything but an exciting fight for all those fans who are lucky enough to catch it!

“I’m expecting a great fight! I just want to say something; whoever is going to come to the fight, don’t fall asleep. Don’t talk to whoever is next to you or don’t go to the bathroom or don’t go buy a beer. Because when Edgar fights, make sure you got everything you need there because anything is going to happen in that fight! That fight is going to be explosive!

For one, Angulo is so strong and I know he got the best coaches there with him, Pedro Diaz. But Edgar is explosive, powerful, speed and anything can happen, but I believe it’s going to be in Edgar’s way.”
