Terence Crawford Laments Lack of Black Unity on Making the Spence Fight

WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (38-0, 29 KO’s) is temporarily out of action dealing with a lawsuit he filed against his former employer, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. However, Crawford believes that a showdown with unified champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (27-0, 21 KO’s) is not happening due to a lack of racial solidarity.

After stopping two-time welterweight champion “Showtime” Shawn Porter in 2021, the Nebraska native should have been on top of the world. Bud had done something nobody has been able to do by stopping Porter in the tenth round.

Crawford officially announced his split from Top Rank shortly afterward in the post-fight interview. The boxing community went into a frenzy, believing this move should have opened the door towards the much-anticipated showdown with the unified champion.

Well, the brakes got pumped on that after Bud’s lawsuit accused Arum’s racial bias of being the main culprit for a Spence fight never materializing. Crawford has not been able to capitalize on the Porter victory as all momentum came to a screeching halt.

THERE SEEMS TO BE ANOTHER PROBLEM

Crawford has been helping former foe Amir Khan prepare for the insanely long-anticipated fight with another former foe in Kell Brook. While in the United Kingdom to show his support, he was interviewed by SecondsOut. Here, he laid blame at the feet of another culprit.

“I do believe he [Spence} wants the fight, and I have been wanting the fight. But, I think the politics behind closed doors is the reason why the fight never happened.

You know when you got two black fighters, when you got a segregating from ‘oh you on top rank, we PBC [Premier Boxing Champions], this and that and that and this,’ everybody bringing up all these excuses. Instead of coming together, we want to tear each other down.

It’s crazy, you know as a black race, you know for us to always want to tear each other down instead of building each other up. I think that is the only thing that’s been basically preventing the fight.”
