Errol Spence Hopeful of Title Run After Coming Tim Tszyu Fight
At long last, Errol “The Truth” Spence is preparing to make his return to the ring. The former unified welterweight champion is targeting a summer showdown with former WBO junior middleweight titleholder Tim Tszyu. However, serious questions surround Spence’s comeback, particularly whether too much time has passed for it to lead to any meaningful long-term success.
Spence (28-1, 22 KO’s) has been inactive since suffering a ninth-round stoppage loss to Terence Crawford in September 2023. After years of speculation about a return, fans are finally set to see him back in action—this time at junior middleweight against Tszyu (26-3, 18 KO’s).
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
The concern for the 35-year-old Spence is clear. The accumulation of injuries throughout his professional career raises doubts about how much he has left, physically. Simply put, this is not a young 35. Time is undefeated, even for elite fighters coming off lengthy layoffs.
Spence may still possess enough ability to defeat Tszyu, who has lost three of his last five bouts. But Spence’s ambitions extend beyond a single win. The Texas native is aiming to capture a world title at 154 pounds.
That goal raises an even bigger question: can Spence compete with the division’s younger elite such as Sebastian Fundora, Jaron Ennis, Vergil Ortiz Jr., and Xander Zayas? Much will depend on how he looks against Tszyu, but the early signs suggest that matching the success of his prime years will be a difficult task.
