Eddie Hearn Signals that Ellie Scotney Could Face Julissa Alejandra Guzman Next

In boxing, fighters can find themselves either one fight away from retirement or one fight away from a world title shot. Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is interested in making a fight with world title challenger “La Roquera” Julissa Alejandra Guzman (13-2-2, 7KO) versus newly crowned IBF champion Ellie Scotney (7-0).

On June 17, Guzman shocked the boxing world with a victory over heavy favorite and amateur standout Ramla Ali. The one-time title challenger was having trouble with the boxing ability of Ali in the beginning. However, she found success with the overhand right in the second half of the fight before landing a left hook that ended the contest in the eighth round.

In the post-fight interview, Hearn floated the idea of matching Guzman up with several fighters in the division, including the IBF champion.

“At one hundred twenty-two pounds, you saw Ellie Scotney in a really good fight against Cherneka Johnson. I love Scotney against Guzman . . . I also love Guzman against [former world champion] Erika Cruz, a little Mexican match-up; that’s a tremendous fight.”

There are even more fights that could be on the horizon for Guzman. A showdown with WBA champion Mayerlin Rivas would be a fan-friendly battle. Two-time WBO champion Segolene Lefebvre should be added to the mix as well.

La Roquera is willing to fight any of the champions, but a rematch with WBC champion Yamileth Mercado could also be in play. Ali was penciled in to fight the WBC champion, providing she was victorious. Guzman should be awarded the fight considering she was the victor.

The super bantamweight division is becoming one of the most must-see divisions in women’s boxing.
