Eddie Hearn & Oscar De La Hoya Embraces Ennis vs Ortiz Fight
IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (33-0, 29KO) and WBC interim junior middleweight titlist Vergil Ortiz Jr (22-0, 21KO) are on pace to cross paths. In addition, promoters Eddie Hearn and Oscar De La Hoya embrace making the fight happen next.
Boots was promising a knockout in the build-up for the rematch against Karen Chukhadzhian. However, he could not keep his word and put on a less-than-stellar performance that will undoubtedly attract heavy criticism.
During the post-fight interview, Ennis hinted at moving to junior middleweight.
“My performance was ok. I don’t know man, I think it might be time to 154. I felt good. But, I feel like at 54, I’m going to be way better, and my pop is going to be how it’s supposed to be.”
MAKE IT HAPPEN NEXT
Golden Boy Promotions, De La Hoya, quickly took to social media asking Saudi Arabia’s power player Turki Alalshikh to make another 5v5 card with Ortiz versus Ennis as the main event. (Tweet here)
Matchroom Boxing Chairman, Hearn, has called for a 5v5 tournament before so he shouldn’t have any objections to making it happen. In addition, he revealed that Alalshikh is interested in the fight while taking a jab at his rival.
“We spoke to his excellency, you’ve seen it on the 5v5 with Oscar De La Plunker. I think that it’s a case of just making the fight. I’m sure I’ll get a phone call in the next 10 or 15 minutes to confirm the fight. We’re ready to go for February 22nd.”
“Boots against Vergil Ortiz is one of the best fights in the sport.” – Eddie Hearn
These two fighters were linked together years ago when Ortiz campaigned at welterweight. The opportunity to make the fight is within reach as they could be in the same division again.
Boxing fans can only hope both promoters aren’t just talking and make the fight a reality for 2025.
