Edgar Berlanga Brags On his Prison-Inspired Mentality

As his fight with unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO’s) draws ever closer, Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-0, 17 KO’s) insists that his ring IQ will be the main factor leading to his victory. Now, in a sit-down with Fight Hub TV, Berlanga is going a bit deeper with this theory stating that his overall mentality will be his edge.

“It sounds crazy right, but I got felons on my team, bro. Like ex-felons, guys that did a lot of years in prison. So I got that mentality, like I’m a killer, bro. And he implanted that in me, my dad implanted that in me, you know what I am saying. I am a killer bro. So, in that ring I am a killer. So, it’s like, that’s just what I bring.”

ONLY TWO WAYS OUT OF THIS LIFE

Only time will tell how the duel between these two play out in the ring. Yet one can only hope Berlanga will have more substance on fight night. While it may sound good to some, fighters being friendly with folks who have run afoul of the law is nothing new in boxing. The sport has always rubbed elbows with the underworld, and fighters having close ties with well accomplished street figures is fairly standard.

For example, heavyweight Jared Anderson has talked at length about his brother who is currently serving a lengthy sentence in jail right now. Yet, this relationship didn’t prevent Martin Bakole from knocking Anderson out in his last match. So, unless Berlanga plans on sneaking a gun or knife in the ring, or ambushing Canelo in a back alley, his street ties will have remarkably little to do with their upcoming fisticuffs.

Along the same lines, his gritty and hardened entourage didn’t aid him in the five bouts he went the distance or when Marcelo Coceres put him down on the canvas. So again, Berlanga is free to gain confidence from whatever inspiration he can find. Yet, let’s hope his fight preparation is built on more than his rather paltry resume and a handful of chums who made a habit of throwing rocks at the penitentiary and got knocked for it.
