Sunny Edwards Could Challenge Nontshinga or Curiel Next
Former IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards (20-1, 4KO) is contemplating a move to become a two-division world champion. The British fighter is intrigued by the prospect of challenging the winner of the IBF light flyweight championship rematch between Adrian Curiel (24-4-1, 5KO) and Sivenathi Nontshinga (12-1, 9KO).
Edwards recently experienced his first career defeat when he was stopped by unified champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez on December 16. Taking time to reflect on that day, Edwards is eager to reenter the title hunt.
HE WANTS TO CAPTURE A TITLE IN ANOTHER DIVISION
In a conversation with Boxing Social, Edwards discussed the possibility of moving down in weight for a title shot.
“I know I can make light fly (weight). I know there’s big fights at super fly . . . I defended the title four times; done everything they’ve ever asked of me. I know they like me as a champion, and with the IBF, they usually push the champions back at the title shots.”
“So, if I go down to light flyweight and fight the winner of Nontshinga-Curiel, maybe to become a two-weight world champion.”
Matchroom Boxing recently announced the rematch between Curiel and Nontshinga. In Curiel’s first fight outside of Mexico, he surprised the boxing world with a second-round knockout to claim the title
Edwards recognizes that the first step is allowing the left eye, injured in the last fight, to heal. It’s a priority before jumping back into the ring. As 2024 approaches, it’s evident that he has no intentions of slowing down and is determined to reclaim championship status.
