Sunny Edwards Reiterates His Desire To Fight Julio Cesar Martinez

It’s been a little over a week since Sunny Edwards (17-0, 4 KOs) successfully defended the IBF world flyweight title. On December 11, the fighter nicknamed “Showtime” defeated mandatory challenger Jayson Mama by a clear-cut unanimous decision. Following the win, Edwards called for a match with WBC 112-pound champ Julio Cesar Martinez (18-1, 14 KOs). During an interview with UK’s iFL TV, the 25-year-old explained why he wants to face the hard-hitting Martinez.

ONE FIGHTER ON HIS RADAR

“I cleared up my mandatory with Mama, and the first name I called was Martinez. I want the big fights. He’s probably the biggest name in the division at the moment.

I think since he’s seen my career progress now, I think he’s probably pointing at me as well, as much as I’m pointing to him… I just want the fights that people are excited for. I say it all the time.

People just think I’m saying it just for cliche because it sounds good. The fights that you’re excited for, believe me, I’m more excited for. That’s why I’ve always been vocal. I’ve always been chasing fights from early on.”

READY TO TEST HIMSELF

Martinez came to prominence against then-WBC flyweight champ and Sunny’s brother, Charlie, in August of 2019. In that contest, Martinez was dominating and looked to be on the way to a knockout victory. However, after hitting Charlie with a body shot while he was down on one knee, the bout was ruled a no-contest.

Edwards says his desire to fight the WBC champ is not necessarily about gaining revenge for his brother. Instead, it’s about creating his legacy. When pressed if he’s willing to fight Martinez in his native Mexico, the IBF champ said he’d fight him anywhere. The Brit has visions of knocking off Martinez then moving on to bigger and better.

“Give me the best, and I’m winning. Then once I clear this division, I’ll go up and do them as well. That’s how much I believe in myself.”
