Stephen Espinoza Backs Davis vs Cruz Sequel Ahead of Fight Talks
Multi-divisional champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KO) is rumored to be considering two fighters as potential next opponents: Chris “Primetime” Colbert (17-1, 6 KO) and Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (24-2-1, 17 KO). Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza believes it is premature to talk about Davis’s next opponent. Still, he is intrigued by the idea of a rematch with Cruz.
On July 14, Tank hit the news cycle after being released from jail for violating the terms of his house arrest. Team Davis is looking to get back into the ring sometime this year.
LET’S TALK ABOUT IT
While speaking to Fighthype, Espinoza stated that he hasn’t spoken to Davis yet but hopes to talk to him soon.
“It’s sort of a little bit premature . . . nothing has been determined. Tank is just, you know, out and starting to get back into the gym. I do expect to see him this weekend, but we really haven’t engaged in those discussions yet.”
The Showtime executive explained why a Cruz rematch is the more intriguing fight.
“I think it’s an interesting one because of Isaac’s style and the fact that neither one of those guys was completely satisfied with how the first fight went. Isaac believes he had a missed opportunity . . . Tank was hampered by the hand. I’d love to see that fight again.”
Cruz is fighting Giovanny Cabrera on July 29 on the Errol Spence Jr. vs Terence Crawford undercard. Colbert got a controversial victory over Jose Valenzuela on March 25. If the goal for Team Davis is to fight for a third time this year, it seems they are determined to make it happen.
