Seniesa Estrada Makes Easy Work of Maria Santizo

At the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada (22-0, 9KOs) made the first defense of the WBA women’s world minimumweight title against Maria Santizo (9-1, 5KOs).

It has been a banner year for the defending champ. In March of 2021, the 29-year-old routed Anabel Ortiz to capture the WBA world title at 105 pounds. She followed that by defeating Tenkai Tsunami to claim the WBO world junior flyweight title.

Estrada believes this is just the beginning. Pundits are starting to rank her as one of the best fighters in the world. Her promoter, Golden Boy, wants to make her a future star.

But, before any future aspirations, there was the business of Santizo, who came into this bout confident. She prepared for this bout in Las Vegas under the guidance of new trainer Clarence “Bones” Adams. The 36-year-old felt ready and prepared to pull off the upset. As an aside, Estrada-Santizo went three-minute rounds rather than the standard two-minute rounds for women’s fights.

PUTTING ON A SHOW

The defending champ is lauded for her outstanding boxing ability. She put those skills on full display early and often as she popped the challenger’s head back with sharp jabs and combinations in the first two rounds. Santizo charged forward like a bull. But, Estrada countered with beautiful combinations to the head and body. Then, she switched from orthodox to southpaw, putting her full arsenal on display.

So confident was Estrada that she switched from orthodox to southpaw with ease. Midway through the third, she connected with a thunderous right-hand that put Santizo down. A follow-up assault produced a second knockdown with ten seconds on the round. You could tell the end was coming soon. Fighting from the southpaw stance in the fourth, “Super Bad” landed with a thunderous straight left that put Santizo down for good.

Insiders often refer to Estrada as a women’s equivalent of three-division champ Vasyl Lomanchenko. She lived up to that praise with an overwhelming performance in one of the knockouts of the year. After the fight, she said that her next target is a unification bout with IBF women’s champ Yokasta Valle.
