Ryan Garcia claps back at Leonard Ellerbe
Former WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan “KingRy” Garcia (21-0, 18ko) is back on the boxing scene. Garcia, after taking some time off due to mental health issues, wants to revisit fighting three-divisional champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (25-0, 24ko).
A LOOK BACK INTO THE PAST
Garcia was riding a high wave after defeating Luke Campbell for the interim title back on January 2. The young fighter found himself facing adversity and was knocked down in the first round. He overcame, getting back up and stopping Campbell in the seventh.
Kingry finally had his moment to prove why he is the next Golden Boy Promotions superstar. Garcia’s victory over Campbell made him the mandatory challenger to fight WBC champion Devin “The Dream” Haney. However, he instead immediately put all focus on a fight with Tank.
The Baltimore power puncher would commit to a Garcia fight on Mike Tyson’s Podcast HotBoxin. The boxing community reacted by going into a frenzy. He would halt the social media blitz himself after informing the fans that he was no longer pursuing a fight with Davis. Garcia dropped even bigger news about a possible match-up with then WBA Welterweight champion Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao was in the works.
The Pacquiao fight did not happen either, and he was ordered by the WBC to fight with Javier Fortuna. Garcia would then pull out of yet another fight, stepping away from boxing to deal with mental health issues.
REVISITING THE FIGHT IN THE PRESENT
Davis recently scored another knockout victory while grabbing the WBA ‘Regular’ junior welterweight championship away from Marios Barrios via technical knockout on June 26. It now seems Garcia is ready to resume his boxing and wants to revisit the fight with Davis. Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe took to social media, letting people know they tried to make that fight prior to the Barrios bout.
“For the record, we tried to make the Ryan Garcia fight back in March with Golden Boy, and they told me they were exploring other options and he would be fighting soon.”
Well, KingRy would respond, making it known that a fight with Davis is still his top priority.
