Gervonta Davis Released Following House Arrest Violation

Gevonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) has now been released. According to Baltimore Banner, the reigning WBA Regular lightweight champion was released from a Baltimore County jail early Friday afternoon.

A YEAR OF TURMOIL

In May 2023, the 28-year-old was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest for his role in a hit-and-run incident in November 2020. In June 2023, Davis was ordered to serve the remaining time of his house arrest in jail. During an impromptu hearing, Baltimore Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy ruled that Davis violated the terms of his house arrest.

Now out of jail, the anticipation will be high from the boxing community about his eventual return to the ring. Davis’ last bout was a seventh-round stoppage over Ryan Garcia in April 2022. After the win, Davis anointed himself as the new face of boxing.

It’s a claim that was a big topic of debate by observers. However, his popularity is undeniable. The fight with Garcia was a financial success and showed that Davis is a mainstream star.

WHAT COULD BE ON THE HORIZON?

Fans would love to see Tank face the reigning undisputed lightweight champion, Devin “The Dream” Haney. The undisputed champion is leaning towards moving up to junior welterweight, and rumors persist that he could fight WBC junior welterweight champion Regis Progrias this fall. Could he and his team tempt Haney to stay at lightweight for a fight?

There’s also a potential match-up between Davis and two-time champion Shakur Stevenson. Davis could also go up in weight and attempt to make a fight with Prograis.

One could argue that Davis is the money man from 130-140 pounds. Whenever he resumes his career, he is a fighter with plenty of options in front of him. It’s going to be interesting to see what he and his camp have in store.
