Shakhram Giyasov Drops and Decisions Christian Gomez
Rising welterweight prospect Shakhram “Wonder Boy” Giyasov (13-0, 9 KO’s) continued to impress in his latest victory. While fighting on the high-profile Canelo Alvarez versus Dmitry Bivol undercard, Giyasov toppled Mexican boxer Christian “Ninote” Gomez (22-3-1, 20 KO’s) by way of a wide unanimous decision.
As for the Uzbekistan fighter Giyasov, the sky continues to be the limit for the amateur standout who boasts a silver medal from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. In his last match, Wonder Boy thoroughly outclassed Cristian Rafael Coria to snag a wide unanimous decision win. The three bouts prior to Coria were all won by way of knockout. It’ll be fun to see where and what the talented fighter does in his next few prizefights.
A FEW BUMPS IN THE ROAD
There was not much to see in the first round other than Giyasov coming forward riding springy feet behind a suitable jab. Yet, it should be noted that after throwing the jab, Wonder Boy couldn’t have held his hand any lower had he been shot in that lead shoulder. Giyasov remained in control during the second, picked up the pace and began regularly digging to the body. Outside of Giyasov eating a single, hard left hook that he ate well, the third largely resembled the second.
With the arrival of the fourth, Giyasov was put on the back foot and now had a trickle of blood coming from his nose. Just as the fight seemed it might shift momentum, Wonder Boy dropped Gomez hard with a sneaky left hook. For the remainder of the period, Gomez just looked to survive. The fifth was more of a stalemate round which saw Gomez close the period with a couple thumping uppercuts and hooks. Wonder Boy also picked up a small cut on the outside corner of his left eye.
FINISH STRONG
Over the sixth and seventh rounds, Giyasov got in his matador bag and began reestablishing control of the fight. At the midway point in the round, Wonder Boy dropped Gomez with a right uppercut. Moments later Gomez badly staggered Giyasov with a glancing left uppercut. Once again in the eighth, Gomez hurt the amateur standout with multiple blows and kept him skittering along the ropes for most of the period.
Not wanting the judges to decide the match, Wonder Boy managed to drop Gomez with a right uppercut in the tenth and final round. Even though he was clearly hurt badly, Gomez made it to his feet and soldiered on without any further incident. When the scorecards were read, Giyasov won a comfortable unanimous decision to the tune of 99-88 (twice), 98-89.
