Roger Gutierrez and Hector Garcia to Stage Junior Lightweight Title Bout on July 10
In boxing, fighters have to always be ready because an opportunity can strike at any time. The WBA has announced that Regular junior lightweight champion Roger “The Kid” Gutierrez (26-3-1, 20KOs) will defend the title against top contender Hector “El Androide” Garcia (15-0, 10KOs).
According to the WBA, the clash will go down in the champion’s home country at the Mythical Poliedro de Caracas, Venezuela on July 10. Originally Gutierrez was supposed to face former top contender Chris “Primetime” Colbert on Showtime on February 26. However, The Kid contracted COVID-19, preventing the fight from taking place.
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF AN OPPORTUNITY
In came replacement fighter Garcia. The Dominican took full advantage of the opportunity on a two-week notice against Colbert. El Androide came out early, landing with blistering combinations, which gave Colbert trouble throughout the fight.
Garcia became the first man to knock down Primetime and continued to hurt Colbert en route to scoring the biggest win of his career. It was a sound beating that saw him get dominating scorecard results while winning the WBA eliminator.
Gutierrez was entangled in a trilogy with former WBA champion Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado. In their first meeting, Alvarado scored a seventh-round stoppage over Gutierrez in 2017. However, he would exact revenge when it counted for the championship twice in 2021.
As of right now, there is no super champion of the division. Former belt-holder Gervonta Davis vacated the title. This means the winner of this fight could be elevated to super champion status.
