Eddie Hearn Says Team Whyte Wants To Large An Offer for AJ Rematch
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is not sure the rematch with former unified heavyweight champion Anthony “AJ” Joshua (25-3, 22KO) and Dillian “The Body Snatcher” Whyte (29-3, 19KO) can get made.
In April, Hearn revealed a rematch featuring the two rivals was under consideration. Joshua wants one more fight before going into a possible high-profile tussle with one-time WBC champion Deontay Wilder in December.
EDDIE HEARN REVEALS THE ISSUE WITH MAKING THE REMATCH
It seems the rematch is in jeopardy and money is the issue. In speaking with iFL TV, Hearn gave a quick breakdown of the negotiations.
“We spoke last night to his team and this morning, and I don’t know. We made an offer; they felt that offer was unacceptable. We may be too far out on the money to make that fight. We’re looking at two other opponents for August 12.”
Hearn added that if the rematch doesn’t happen, they will look to fight someone within the top 15 in the rankings. Moreover, he revealed that Anthony Joshua and new trainer Derrick James were adamant about fighting Whyte.
HEARN SAYS THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE IN THE MARKET
The British promoter ended the topic by explaining why money is the problem in this situation.
“The money Dillian Whyte wants, the money AJ wants – the market is starting to change a little bit in general for boxing, and I don’t think we can get to the number that Dillian wants for that fight.”
The bad blood between AJ and Whyte goes back to 2015 when they first fought with Joshua coming out the victor. Recently they sent a buzz throughout social media with a heated exchange.
There is still a sliver of hope they can work something out, but with roughly eight weeks left before August 15, things don’t look promising.
